Saxon on tour with Motörhead
In an interview with Vanessa Warwick , former 'Headbangers Ball' presenter, Saxon frontman Biff Byford was asked which experience from the world of metal had stuck in his mind the most.
"One of my earliest metal memories is the tour with Motörhead in 1979," Biff replies. "It was our first tour ever and the first time we were on a tour bus.
They invited us to travel with them on the bus. We were very naive Yorkshire lads then - and probably still are a bit. But back then we hadn't seen the glamorous side of being a musician."

No Drugs for Biff Byford
Byford describes a defining scene: "We went to London where they were doing 'Top Of The Pops' - and of course we weren't. So we hung around and watched the show. Then they came out of the studio with about seven girls. It was the first time we'd seen so many groupies. It was a real eye-opener. And Lemmy was into all sorts of things, as he was, and tried to persuade us to do them too. But we weren't involved in that kind of thing. It was quite surreal."Biff Byford was also deeply impressed by everyday life on tour: "We were at the front of the bus, they were at the back. It was a great time and Motörhead helped us a lot in our early careers. They were good friends of ours and remained so forever. But that first tour was really special.
There were about 30 shows, with no breaks, every day in the bus and hotel ," he continues. "At the beginning of the tour there was a concert in Birmingham and one in London, and at the end of the tour we had three nights in Birmingham and three in Hammersmith. It was like an endless cycle." For the frontman, this tour will always remain in his memory as the most impressive. Definitely the experience that shaped him the most when it comes to heavy metal.
